By Randall Roberts Apr 29, 7: Sports Arena and Exposition Park in He’ll perform as part of In the Red Records’ 25th anniversary party. This summer, the Los Angeles-based imprint will honor 25 years and thousands of three-chord wonders with a three-day festival bound to make garage rock fans drool: Advertisement Based in an awesome compound in Eagle Rock, the label is owned and operated by unsung mover Larry Hardy, and has issued essential recordings from a mess of rock ‘n’ roll antiheroes and never-weres. As recklessly determined as the chorus to “Surfin’ Bird,” the sound of In the Red hasn’t changed much since its birth in Distorted three- or four-minute rock ‘n’ roll songs celebrate its primal energy, but the label’s tone has stealthily infiltrated the mainstream through artists including the White Stripes and the Black Keys, both of which drew early inspiration from Midwest bands that first earned ears via In the Red. Fronted by the great Mick Collins, the band will perform in Los Angeles for the first time in half a decade.
The machines are playing ‘kill-by-numbers’ Down in the park with a friend called ‘Five’ In Fall , I attended a coffee shop fundraiser for a progressive political organization. The Big Election was coming up and, being in a more sensitive frame of mind than usual, I attended. The weather was pretty depressing, as I recall, and there was a sense of real pessimism in the air. Still, local bands, some containing friends, were playing and a full afternoon, if not an actual good time, was guaranteed for all.
The line-up consisted of eccentric New Weird Folkidelica alongside potent electronic avant-gargling and a classical string duo. Alec K Redfearn , an accordionist, close friend, and on-off bandmade of Yours Truly, also played a set.
From scrappy, DIY spaces like the Smell, all the way up to the legendary Hollywood Bowl, L.A. teems with superb concert venues. Here are 50 of the best.
NEWS Steven Tyler headlined an exclusive media show last night 8 February at Nashville’s aVenue club, wowing a roomful of radio programmers with his new country material and classic Aerosmith hits. Anticipation grows for his album, on which he’s been working since moving to Nashville a year ago. Earlier in the evening, there were performances by southern country-rock band A Thousand Horses, ahead of their appearance at the UK’s C2C Festival next month; the Cadillac Three, fresh from their highly successful UK tour which had ended only 48 hours earlier; and Alabama-born, Nashville-based country artist Drake White, who is Tyler’s labelmate at Dot.
She was also enduring the end of her marriage, while welcoming the birth of her second child. Helm, who had been part of the alt-country band Ollabelle and a longtime member of her father’s Midnight Ramble Band, was led by the seismic shift those life-changing events created to re-record half the album. It stands to reason, then, that Helm would be especially drawn to one of the LP’s cover tunes, “Good News. In the summer of , Cooke’s month-old son drowned in the family’s swimming pool.
The tune served as the title track of Ain’t That Good News, the last he would release before his own tragic shooting death at 33 in December For her rousing version of the song, Helm looked no further than her family’s own backyard. Filmed entirely outdoors on a crisp autumn day, outside the Levon Helm Studios and “the Barn” where the Midnight Ramble performance sessions and other concert events still draw large crowds, the accompanying video for “Good News” follows Helm and her band on a march through the woods.
While Helm’s performance spotlights her raw, organic approach to the tune, it also carries the freewheeling spirit of Cooke’s original. I wanted the video to capture as much of the live energy of my band as we could. So along with great vision from director Michelle Cutolo and crew lead by producer T Zhang, we opted for a live one-shot performance which we filmed on a beautiful autumn day.

Parker Rooftop at the Hotel Lincoln is packed at 6: But on this occasion, a PA system and a slew of microphones invade a square space at the east end of the roof, and people cluster in a semicircle around them, keeping up a garrulous chatter between glances at the makeshift stage. And after a quick introduction from the mustachioed event manager and some enthusiastic cheers, Brooklyn-based indie folksters Widowspeak smile and launch into an eight-song set with the greatest of the Great Lakes providing a stunning backdrop.

Segall ‘s guitar is front and center throughout this album, and the lean, buzzy tone of his axe defines these 11 songs as his chugging chords and single-note leads roar past the lo-fi keyboards and assorted electronic noisemakers that punctuate the tracks. The album’s melodic sense owes more to vintage glam rock than garage rock roar, but Segall makes the most of his semi-chaotic primitivism here, which ought to agree with anyone who eagerly embraced his early and less-polished work.
Emotional Mugger ‘s surfaces are sometimes a bit abrasive, but the melodies demonstrate that Segall ‘s pop sensibilities never stray too far from the surface, and if you’re willing to listen through the occasional layers of buzz and howl, you’ll find this isn’t as far from his more disciplined efforts as you might imagine at first glance. Segall recorded most of Emotional Mugger one-man-band-style, which doubtless informed the album’s purposefully grimy attack, but he had the good sense to bring in Melvins ‘ drummer Dale Crover to keep time with an impressive assault on the Equals ‘ “Diversion,” a cover that works better in this context than anyone would expect.
As Segall ‘s profile has risen in the s, it’s a welcome thing that he hasn’t diluted his musical vision and is still willing to let his music howl when the spirit moves him, and Emotional Mugger is a stiff shot of raw, cocky joy that hits its target beautifully.

I am more comfortable around music people. This machine, however, is a lady machine, with long, misbehaving hair that needs to be smoothed down. Nails need to have a nice sheen like a pool of motor oil or candy paint; I know this from years of UGK listening. Laundry, an absolute must, is the foundation of my pre-BSM routine. Just the way players I play, all day every day. I smelled good cupcakes. It was the end of the afternoon and the end of my cash supply.
The freshness of your Van Exel jersey was not lost on me. And there was John, suddenly, with his clean copy of Birth Day to sell me. Current producers are scared to compete with G Rap and Large Pro , obviously, and this is why none of them have tried to chop and loop it.

Share Tweet Submit Pin Despite the conveniences of streaming services—not to mention their near total domination of the music industry—there are still gaping holes in their offerings. For most of us at Paste, the biggest one was the catalog of Chicago indie label Drag City, home to dozens of underground and not-so-underground American artists ranging from Pavement, Silver Jews and Smog in the s to more recent albums by Joanna Newsom , Jessica Pratt and Ty Segall. For years, the only Drag City albums available on Spotify were those whose digital rights were licensed elsewhere, like the Royal Trux catalog, recently reissued by Fat Possum.
Last year, the label made most of its inventory available on Apple Music, but kept a tight lid in place when it came to the other major streaming players. Asked by Paste why they finally did, a spokeswoman declined to comment.
